What Is a Church Covenant?

Many new members first ask, "What is a church covenant?" Simply put, a church covenant is a set of promises that the members of a local church make to love, pray for, encourage, support, and remain accountable to one another and to God. It is not a contract to earn anything, but a joyful expression of commitment. A covenant takes Jesus' command, "that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another" (John 13:34), and turns it into concrete, shared commitments that bind a church family together for the long road of discipleship.

Promises Members Make

A typical church covenant spells out, in plain and loving language, how the members agree to live as part of the body of Christ. They promise to gather faithfully for worship, to pursue holiness and turn from sin, to support the church's ministry and mission with their gifts and resources, and to walk in love, forgiveness, and patience with one another. They commit to bear one another's burdens, to encourage the discouraged, and to seek the good of the whole congregation. These are not legalistic rules imposed from above, but the kind of mutual care that the New Testament everywhere assumes among believers who belong to one another (Romans 12:5). Why a Covenant Helps

A covenant makes belonging clear, mutual, and gracious. It tells you what the church will ask of you and, just as importantly, what you can expect from the church in return.
